Opening an Office as a Psychologist: Ready Offices, Shared Offices and Virtual Offices

For a psychologist setting up their own practice, the office is a quiet, private space where clients feel safe; it is also the address for tax registration and the place clients need to reach. This guide covers what to consider when opening a psychologist office in Turkey, the difference between a full-time office and an hourly room, and the options at Archerson Workspaces.

The guide is about workspace only and says nothing about therapy or treatment. It is general information, not legal or tax advice; check professional and legal requirements with a lawyer and your accountant.

Short answer

Psychologists can open their own office, but different regulations and permits may apply depending on the type of service and professional title, so confirm with a lawyer before you start. The key points for the office are privacy, quiet and easy access for clients. A private ready office suits daily sessions, an hourly room suits a few sessions a week, and a virtual office can provide an address if you work only online.

1. What are the requirements for opening a psychologist office?

The requirements depend on the type of service you offer and your professional title. Psychological counselling and clinical practice that may count as a health service can fall under different rules, and some practices may come under Ministry of Health regulations. Confirm which permits apply with a lawyer before you start. On the tax side there is self-employment registration and an inspection.

What to clarify before you start:

  • Type of service and title: Which category your service falls into and whether it needs a permit or licence.
  • Tax registration: The start-of-business notice as a self-employed professional, the inspection at the office address and the opening of your tax registration; your accountant usually handles these.
  • Receipts: Ask your accountant about self-employment receipts and the electronic receipt obligation.
  • Ethics: Professional associations publish ethical principles on confidentiality, record keeping and the client relationship; follow those of your association.
  • Office conditions: Privacy, sound insulation, waiting arrangements and accessibility (below).

2. What matters in a psychologist office?

The three most important points in a psychologist office are privacy, quiet and easy access for clients. Conversations should not carry outside the room, clients should be able to wait without meeting each other, and the office should be easy to reach by public transport. If you plan evening sessions, the building needs to be open at those hours. Check these points on site before you rent.

Checklist for choosing an office

  • Is the room sound-insulated; can a conversation be heard from outside with the door closed?
  • Can clients wait somewhere separate from the common area?
  • Does the building suit your evening and weekend session hours?
  • Is there public transport and parking for clients?
  • Can you arrange the room (seating, lighting) the way you work?

3. A full-time office or an hourly room?

If you hold a few sessions a week, an hourly room or a shared office lets you match costs to your needs. As your client list grows, or if you want to set up the room your own way, a private office suits you better. If you work online and only need an address, a virtual office is an option; confirm that it suits your tax and professional situation.

4. How does a shared psychologist office work?

In a shared practice office, several practitioners use the same room or office space on different days and at different times. Each practitioner pays for the time they use, while common areas and reception are shared. Agreeing the room schedule, file storage and confidentiality rules in writing is important.

If you want to share a room with other practitioners at Archerson, discuss the terms with our team in advance; meeting room packages are also an option for hourly use.
